2009 Great Lakes Regional Championships
The 2009 Great Lakes Regional was held on February 21, 2009 at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, Wisconsin. Of the ten Augsburg competitors, nine qualified for advancement to Nationals. Augsburg claimed 4 champions.[1]

Defending national champion Seth Flodeen competed for Augsburg at 125 pounds and drew the second seed. Flodeen faced Ian Peppel of St. Olaf in the first round and won by fall at 2:05. In the second round, Flodeen faced seventh-seeded David Copp of Lakeland and won by fall at 4:20. Flodeen advanced to the final with a pin of sixth-seeded Jimmy Schoettle of the University of Chicago. In the final, Flodeen faced top-seeded and top-ranked Jake Oster of Elmhurst, to whom he lost to earlier in the year. Flodeen fell when Oster pinned him at 2:10. Flodeen advanced to Nationals with a true-second match decision over fourth-seeded Joe Norton of North Central College, 4-0.[1]

Top-ranked Travis Lang competed for Augsburg at 133 pounds and drew the first seed. In the first round, Lang pinned Jonathan Rhine of Maranatha Baptist Bible College at 1:24. In the second round, pinned Roberto Frias of Lakeland at 1:28. In the semi-finals, Lang pinned unseeded Mike Holman of Concordia College–Moorhead at 1:53. Holman had beaten both the fourth- and fifth-seeded wrestlers to advance to the semi-final match. In the final, Lang fell to third-seeded Munkhbaatar Baatar of St John's University. Lang advanced to Nationals by pinning Ben Hart of the University of Chicago at 1:00 in the true-second match.[1]

Tony Valek competed for Augsburg at 141 pounds, and drew the third seed. Valek opened the tournament with a 1:20 pin of Charlie Deutsch of Knox College. Valek then claimed a 8-4 decision over sixth-seeded Jamie Devine of North Central College. Valek then fell in the semi-finals to St John's University's second-ranked Myanganbayar Batsukh by a 7-3 decision. In the wrestleback semi-finals, Valek defeated fifth-seeded Kory Theil of Lakeland College by pin at 4:02. In the third-place match, Valek won by decision over top-seeded Ben Anderson of Concordia College–Moorhead, 2-1. Valek advanced to Nationals by defeated fourth-seeded Virgil Pope of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 7-3 decision.[1]

Top-ranked Willy Holst competed for Augsburg at 149 pounds and drew the first seed. In the first round Holst claimed tournament high 35-second pin over Christian Groom of Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Holst then claimed a 10-0 major decision over eight-seeded Zachary Holland of Augustana College. In the semi-finals, Holst claimed a 10-5 decision over Concordia University Wisconsin's fifth-seeded Joey Massman. In the final Holst pinned third-seeded Justin Berns of Concordia College–Moorhead at 3:23.[1]

Jason Adams competed for Augsburg at 157 pounds and drew the first seed and one of three first-round byes Augsburg received. In the second round, Adams earned an 8-0 major decision over Nick Parrish of Elmhurst. In the semi-finals, Adams advanced to the final with a 7-3 decision over fourth-seeded Lane Lunde of Concordia College–Moorhead. In the final, Adams defeated Jonas Flok of Lakeland via a 13-4 major decision.[1]

Orlando Ponce competed for Augsburg at 165 in only his second varsity appearance after loosing his debut match to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's seventh-ranked Jake Wozniak. Wozniak later advanced to Nationals, but did not place after loosing in the second round of the wrestlebacks.[1]
Ponce drew the fourth seed and opened the tournament with a 13-3 major decision over Nathan Shay of Pacific University. In the second round, Ponce defeated Justin Marble of Wheaton 2-1. Ponce fell in the semi-finals to top-seeded Ben Youel of North Central College, 8-2. In the wrestleback semi-finals, Ponce earned his second one-point victory of the tournament with an 11-10 decision in the third sudden victory round over fifth-seeded Matt Schrupp of St John's University. In the third-place match, Ponce earned a 8-6 decision over Elmhurst's Greg Horn. Ponce advanced to Nationals as a "wild card" entrant.[1]

Zach Molitor competed for Augsburg at 174 pounds and earned the second seed. Molitor received Augsburg's second first-round bye. In the second round, Molitor pinned seventh-seeded Ross Dankers of Concordia College–Moorhead at 6:30. In the semi-finals, Molitor faced another MIAC opponent, this time third-seeded Grant Eustice of St John's University. Molitor defeated Eustice by a 9-1 major decision. In the final, Molitor defeated top-seeded Troy Carlson of the University of Chicago by fall at 3:45.[1]

Brad Baus competed for Augsburg at 184 pounds, and was the only Augsburg wrestler to not merit a seed. Baus fell 9-2 to fourth-seeded Toby Boltz of Wheaton. Baus received a bye in the first round of the wrestlebacks, but lost in the second round to sixth-seeded Matthew Olsen of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Baus did not advance to Nationals, the only Augsburg wrestlers not to do so.[1]

Top-ranked Jared Massey competed for Augsburg at 197 pounds and earned the top seed. In the first round, Massey faced Jordon Branson (Pacific) and won by fall at 1:08. In the second round, Massey won by pin over eight-seeded Alex Faulkner (Knox) at 4:36. In the semi-finals, Massey won by fall over fourth-seeded Vincent Sapienza (North Central) at 1:20. In the final, Massey earned a 6-2 decision over second-seeded Anthony Neumann of Concordia College–Moorhead.[1]

Andy Witzel represented Augsburg at heavyweight and earned the top seed and Augsburg third first-round bye. In the second round, Witzel earned a 2-0 decision over eight-seeded Ryan Hatten (U of Chic). In the semi-finals, Witzel claimed a 6:54 pin over Billy Malone (North Central). Witzel fell in the final, 3-2 against second-seeded Mark Corsello (Elmhurst). Witzel advanced to Nationals with a true-second match 2-1 decision over third-seeded Adam Sutter (Lakeland).[1]
