Brian Gaffney

Brian Gaffney is a former Augsburg 133-pound wrestler. A transfer from the University of Dubuque (Iowa), Gaffney wrestled for the Auggies during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons.

High school career

Gaffney wrestled for Portage High School (Wis.), and finished his senior season (2005) with a fourth-place finish at the Division 1 state tournament (125 lbs.).[1]

College career

2005–06 season

Before coming to Augsburg, Gaffney wrestled for the University of Dubuque (Iowa).[1] During the 2005–06 season at Dubuque, Gaffney competed in several tournaments. At the 2005 Spartan Open, Gaffney went 0-2. He was pinned by both his opponents: Cody Goble (Unattatched) at 4:53 and Jared Christner (Millikin) at 3:59.[2] At the Central Invitational on January 14, 2006, Gaffney went 1-2 at 133 pounds. Gaffney was first pinned by Scott Treft (Northwestern College) at 1:59 into the second period. Gaffney then pinned Matt Korneik (Buena Vista University) at 2:06 in the first period in the wrestledbacks before being pinned by Jordan Loy (Loras) 37 seconds into the second period.[3] At the Moco Mercer Wrestling Open at Dubuque later in the season, Gaffney went 1-2, finishing eight at 133 pounds. He was first pinned by Scotty Frank (Loras) at 2:48. He then won by decision over Andy Casper (UW Platteville), 4-3. Gaffney then lost to Jordan Loy (Loras) by a 14-2 major decision. In the seventh place match, Gaffney lost by a 11-2 major decision to unattached wrestler Erik Senescu.[4]

2008–09 season

Gaffney compiled a 0–2 record on the year. At the 2008 Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open, he was pinned in his first match at in the 133 pound gold bracket by Matthew Maresh (Unattached) in 2:37. In the consolation bracket, he lost 7–1 to Mike Kremer (Wartburg).

2009–10 season

Gaffney began the 2009–10 season listed at 133 pounds.[5] At the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on November 21, Gaffney went 1-2. In the first round, Gaffney was pinned by Malik Stewart 31 seconds into the second period. In the quarterfinals of the seventh-place consolation round, Gaffney defeated Mitch Spano (unattached) 8-2. Gaffney then fell to David Crow (William Penn), 1:20 into the third period.[6] Gaffney went 2–4 during the season.
