Kirk Anderson is a 133-pound Augsburg wrestler. In high school, he was a three-time state champion for Barnesville High School, compiling a 245–16 record. Following high school, Anderson wrestled for Division I North Dakota State University for two years before taking a four-year break from wrestling to serve in the military.

High school career

Anderson was a three-time Minnesota state Class A state champion for Barnesville High School.[1] A six-time state qualifier, Anderson placed five times: second at 103 A in 2003,[2] first at 112 A in 2004,[3] first at 119 A in 2005,[4] third at 125 A in 2006[5] and first at 125 A in 2007.[6] He also went 0–2 at 103 A as seventh grader in 2002.[7]

As of 2013, Anderson's 246-16 high school record ranks 59th on the list of best win percentage[8] and tied for fourth wins total in Minnesota wrestling history.[9] Anderson registered his 100th high school victory on January 23, 2004 as a ninth grader.[10] He later won his 150th match on February 4, 2005 as a tenth grader.[11] He was named to the MWCA All-State Academic Team in both 2006 and 2007.[12]

Seventh grade

On December 8, 2001, Anderson finished first in the Grant County Invitational 103 pound bracket, defeating Melrose's Eric Schoenberg by a 10–3 decision in the final.[13]On December 11, 2001, he defeated Kip Anderson (Pelican Rapids) by a 14-2 major decision at 103 pounds.[14]

On January 10, 2002, Anderson pinned Karl Haataja (Fergus Fall) in 2:36,[15] finished first at the Lake Park-Audubon Invitational on January 18[16] before picking up a forfeit victory against Moorhead on January 24.[17] On January 26, he finished second behind Frazee's Ben Anderson at the Heart 'O Lakes Tournament, falling by a 3–2 score.[18]

On February 1, Anderson recorded a forfeit victory over Lake Park-Audubon at 103 pounds.[19]

On February 16, Anderson finished second at the Class A Section 8 Individual, falling in the section final to eventual state champion Gabriel Mooney (Badger/Greenbush-Middle River) by a 10-2 major decision.[20] With the runner-up finish, he qualified for the state individual tournament where he went 0–2, falling to Nathan Janson (Pierz) 6-4 and Casey Gray (Wheaton/Herman-Norcross) 8-7. He finished the season with a 37–8 record.[7]

Eighth Grade

Anderson's first recorded matches[21] of his eighth grade year occurred on December 10 when he pinned [22] Thomas Guenther (Mahnomen/Waubun).[23] On December 14, he competed at the Barnesville Tournament, claiming a major decision victory Luke Tervola (New York Mills) in the dual tournament final.[24] On December 17 when, as the No. 4 wrestler in Class A, he defeated Kip Anderson (Pelican Rapids) by a 17–0 technical fall at the 4:49 mark in a dual at Barnesville.[25]

On Saturday, December 21 at the Big Bear Tournament in Cass Lake, Minn. He finished in second in the 103 weight class behind Colt Bergeron (Thief River Falls). In the quarterfinal,[26] Anderson defeated Justin Skillings (Detroit Lakes) 15–1. In the semifinal, he defeated Davey Kosen (Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton) by fall in overtime at 6:37 before falling by pin to Bergeron at 5:59 in the final.[27]

Anderson began 2003 with a 3–0 performance at the Perham Duals on January 4, defeating Derek Pesta (Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) 12–1, Jacob Nohl (Morris Area) by fall in 1:14 and Brandon Keller (New London-Spicer) by fall in 1:04.[28] On January 7, he defeated Davey Kosen (Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton) 9–7[29] and two days later scored a technical fall[30] over Karl Haataja (Fergus Falls).[31] Anderson got a tournament title at the Parkers Prairie Invitational on January 11, defeating Rachel Holthaus by fall in 5:02 in the final.[32] On January 17, Kosen repaid the favor for 10 days earlier, defeating Anderson 7–2 in the finals of the Lake Park-Audubon Tournament.[33] On January 23, he pinned Jacob Handegard (Moorhead) at 1:50.[34] Anderson closed the month at the Heart of Lakes Conference Tournament, finishing second behind Kosen. In the semifinal, he claimed a 14-0 major decision over Phil Moenkedick (Perham) in the semifinal before falling 9–2 to Kosen.[35]

On February 4, Barnesville competed at the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Triangular, but no individual records exist. On February 6, Barnesville faced two more schools in dual hosted by Breckenridge, though only Anderson's forfeit victory against Breckenridge was recorded.[36]

On February 14 and 15, Anderson won the Class A Section 8 Individual Tournament, defeating Davey Kosen 14–9 in the final.[37] On February 21, Anderson fell by decision[38] to Jared Hotakainen (New York Mills).[39]

On February 27-March 1, Anderson finished second at the Class A individual state tournament behind five-time champion-to-be Zach Sanders 16–5. He opened the tournament with a 4:45 pin over Adam Hoeper (Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City), followed by a 9–1 major decision over Joey Bullerman (Adrian). In the semifinal match, Anderson defeated Jacob Sass (Chatfield) 10–0 before falling to Sanders (Wabasha Kellogg) in the final.[2]
