Matt Hechsel is a 197 pound Augsburg wrestler. He is a 2013 All-American. Through January 25, 2015, he has a 105–44.

High school career

Hechsel wrestled for Apple Valley (Minn.) High School. He was a two-time state qualifier, placing fifth as a junior in 2010 and third as a senior in 2011.

College career

Hechsel began the season at the home Auggie-Brute Open on November 23, finishing first in the 197-pound Gold Division, three pins and a medical forfeit victory over No 2 (NCAA Div. II) Carl Broghammer (Upper Iowa) in the final.[1] In his first dual meet match of the season on November 26, Hechsel received a forfeit victory against Waldorf (Iowa).[2]

Hechsel improved to 8–0 with a Dragon Open Red Division on Dec. 7. He use a 1:05 pin over Taylor Brown (Concordia-Moorhead) and two shutouts over Division II wrestlers to claim the 197 pound time, first a 4–0 decision over Tyler Schlosser (MSU - Moorhead) and then a 1–0 decision over Chris Brassell (St. Cloud State).[3] On Dec. 11, Hechsel claimed a over 10-0 major decision of Schlosser in a home dual meet against MSU-Moorhead.[4]

On Dec. 14, Hechsel claimed this third tournament title, posting an 4–0 result at the St. Cloud State Husky Open. He opened the tournament with a 13–3 major decision over Robert Tait (St. John's University), before upending Eugene Martin (Southwest State University) 7–4 and Carl Lawrence (Missouri Valley College) 3–1. In the title match, he scored his second victory of the year over Chris Brassell (St. Cloud State), this time by a 3–0 margin.

On Dec. 29, Hechsel participated in the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, going 0–2, losing to eighth-seed Joe Rau[5] 14-2 and then 14–1 to Matt Meadows (George Mason).

Regional

At the 2014 West Regional, Hechsel went 3–1 to finish third and qualify for Nationals.

Nationals

At the 2014 National Championships, Hechsel went 2–2, and did not place.

2014–15 season

Hechsel has a 19–7 through January 25, 2015.[6]
