High school career
Kuehn competed for West Fargo High School, and was a four-time place winner. He finished second in the Class A 130 pound bracket in 2011 and at 125 the year prior. Kuehn also finished as an Academic All-State Wrestler in Class A in both 2010 and 2011.
As a freshman Kuehn finished fifth at 103 pounds. As a sophomore Kuehn had a 34–12 record. He finished third at 119 pounds. As a junior Kuehn had a 36–9 record.
