Jake Grygelko is a former Augsburg 165-pound wrestler. He competed during parts of five seasons, from 2005–10, compiling a 71–53 record.
College career
2005–06 season
Grygelko's first recorded matches came at the Dickinson State Blue Hawk Classic on Jan. 7, 2006 where he went 0–2 at 157 pounds. Grygelko's next recorded matches occurred at the St. John's North Country Invitational when he went 2–2 at 157 pounds. He placed third at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invite on Feb. 4, 2006 when he went 4–1. His final record was 16–14.
2006–07 season
Grygelko went 9–2 on the season.
2007–08 season
Grygelko began the season on Nov. 17, 2007 with a 3–2 showing at the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open, finishing in fourth place at 165 pounds. On Dec. 1, 2007, he went 2–2 at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open. He then went 1–2 at 165 pounds at the Wartburg Dick Walker Invitational on Dec. 8, 2007.
Grygelko started the second semester with a 1–1 showing at the Brute Sunshine Open on Dec. 28 and 29. He also recorded a 2–2 finish at the St. John's North Country Invitational on Feb. 9, 2008.
Grygelko made is varsity dual debut on Feb. 15, competing at 174 pounds. He was pinned by No. 2 Eric Bath of Wisconsin–Stevens Point at 2:35.
Grygelko went 15–13 on the season.
2008–09 season
Grygelko started the year at the Dec. 6, 2008 at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open, going 1–2 in the 157 Red Division. On Dec. 13, he went 4–2 at the St. Cloud State Husky Open.
Grygelko started the second semester at the 2008 Augsburg College Brute/Zac Jarzynka Sunshine Wrestling Classic on Dec. 28 and 29, were he went 1–4 at 157 pounds. He had a 1–2 performance at the Dickinson State University Blue Hawk Classic on Jan. 3, 2009. He placed third at the St. John's University North Country Open on Feb. 7 with a 2–2 showing.
Grygelko went 18–14 on the season.
2009–10 season
Grygelko began the season listed at 165 pounds,[1] competing at that weight at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open on Dec. 6, 2009, were he went 2–2.
On Dec. 12 at the Wartburg Dick Walker Invitational, Grygelko went 2–3 at 165, placing sixth. He started the day as the fifth seed and posted a 11–3 major decision over Matt McIntyre (Augustana) and then an 8–6 decision over fourth-seeded Joey Hambleton (Cornell). In the Semifinals, he lost a by fall to top-seeded Brad Lower (Grand View (Iowa)). In the consolation semifinals, he lost 5–2 to Alex Riniker (Cornell) before losing to Hambleton by fall at 3:20.[2]
On Dec. 28 and 29, Grygelko competed at the Augsburg Brute/Adidas Sunshine Open, going 5–2 for fourth place at 165. He opened the tournament with a 10–2 major decision against Richard Mawarren (STAND) and then a default win over Aaron Jonhenry (Heidelberg) before falling to third seeded Matt Curley (Heidelberg) by a 12–0 major decision. In the wrestleback bracket, he won three in a row to get to the third-place match: first 17–0 over Kyle Paladini (Unattached) and then a 6–5 overtime win over Al Wonesh (College of N.J.) and a forfeit victory over Justin Barowski (Delaware Valley). In the third-place match, he fell by pin to Curley at 2:13.[3]
On Jan. 16, 2010, Grygelko finished third at the Northwestern Open, going 3–1. He started the day with a 5–4 win over fourth-seeded Jakob Price (Baker Univ. (Neb.)) but fell to top seed Brandon Porter (Waldorf College) by an 11–8 decision. He then pinned Tanner LaValliere (Dakota Weslyan Univ.) in 1:39 and posted a 4–0 victory over Rashad Moss (Waldorf College) to claim third place.[4]
On Jan 31, Grygelko placed fifth at 165 with a 3–2 showing at the North Country Open. He started with the seventh seed and a 8–6 in sudden victory over Jacob Bennet (MSU Moorhead) and then pinned teammate John MacCormick in 1:00 before falling to another teammate Orlando Ponce by a 9–4 decision. In the consolation semifinals, he fell by pin to Steven Urquizo (Dickinson State Univ.) at 3:13 and claimed a medical forfeit win over Rashad Moss (Waldorf College) for fifth place.[5]
He finished the season with a 13–10 performance, marking a 71–53 record for his college career.
Junior career
In 2005, Grygelko finished seventh at 160 pounds at the Greco Roman Junior National in Fargo, N.D. Future teammate Seth Flodeen placed third at 119 lbs. in Greco Roman that year as well.
Coaching career
Grygelko has worked with the J Robinson Wrestling Camps, the Hi Flyer Wrestling program,[6] and the St. Michael-Albertville wrestling program.[7] In 2014 worked with the Williston, N.D. youth wrestling program as a volunteer.[8]
