Jared Massey is a 197-pound wrestler for Augsburg College. On March 7, 2009, he won the national title at 197 pounds at the the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships.
College Career
Massey transferred to Augsburg after a four-year break from wrestling. He won the 197-pound individual title at the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships on March 7, 2009 by defeating Ryan Malo of Williams College in an 11-2 major decision.
2008–09 season
Regionals
Massey competed for Augsburg at 197 pounds and earned the top seed. In the first round, Massey faced Jordon Branson (Pacific) and won by fall at 1:08. In the second round, Massey won by pin over eight-seeded Alex Faulkner (Knox) at 4:36. In the semi-finals, Massey won by fall over fourth-seeded Vincent Sapienza (North Central) at 1:20. In the final, Massey earned a 6-2 decision over second-seeded Anthony Neumann of Concordia College–Moorhead.
Nationals
Second-ranked Jared Massey competed for Augsburg at 197 pounds and earned the second seed. Massey received a first round bye and faced Joseph Silverman (MIT) in the second round, whom he defeated by fall at 3:52. In the quarter-finals, Massey earned a 12-1 major decision victory over seventh-seeded Rob Kramer (Coe). In the semi-finals, Massey defeated Karl Voeck (UW Whitewater) by a 4-1 decision. Massey earned his first individual national title when he defeated Ryan Malo (Williams) by a 12-1 major decision.
2009–10 season
Massey entered the season ranked first at 197 pounds in both the NCWA[1] and the d3wrestle.com preseason rankings.[2] Massey will be serving as a captain for the season.[3] At the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on November 21, Valek went 4-0 to claim the title in the 197-pound gold division. In the first round, Massey defeated unattached Quinn Meirick in 7-0 decision. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Morningside's Joe Lockett 10-4. In the semifinals, Massey pinned Upper Iowa's Nick Shandri at the 2:24 mark of the first period. In the finals match, he defeated third-ranked Andy Moore of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a 4-0 decision.[4] On November 25, Massey avenged his lone loss of the previous season by earning a 6-2 decision over No. 4 (Division II) opponent Ty Copsey (Augustana (S.D.)).[5]
On December 8, Massey pinned Division II opponent Jon Swart of Minnesota State University Moorhead 51 seconds into the first period.[6]
