Hechsel began the season at the home Auggie-Brute Open on November 23, finishing first in the 197-pound Gold Division, three pins and a medical forfeit victory over No 2 (NCAA Div. II) Carl Broghammer (Upper Iowa) in the final.[1] In his first dual meet match of the season on November 26, Hechsel received a forfeit victory against Waldorf (Iowa).[2]
Hechsel improved to 8–0 with a Dragon Open Red Division on Dec. 7. He use a 1:05 pin over Taylor Brown (Concordia-Moorhead) and two shutouts over Division II wrestlers to claim the 197 pound time, first a 4–0 decision over Tyler Schlosser (MSU - Moorhead) and then a 1–0 decision over Chris Brassell (St. Cloud State).[3] On Dec. 11, Hechsel claimed a over 10-0 major decision of Schlosser in a home dual meet against MSU -Moorhead.[4]
