John Peterson (born October 22, 1948) is an American wrestler and Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling and member of the Augsburg coaching staff. Peterson is a member of the Wrestling Hall of Fame.[1]

College career

Peterson wrested for the University of Wisconsin-Stout, finishing fifth at 177 pounds at the NAIA nationals in 1971.[1][2]

Olympic career

Peterson competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany where he received a silver medal in freestyle wrestling, the middleweight class.[3] He won a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.[4]

Peterson's brother, Ben Peterson, also competed in both the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, also winning gold (1972) and silver (1976) medals in Freestyle wrestling.[5]
